Chapped lips are often the result of diminished moisture in the skin on and around the lips. Chapped lips are usually marked by dry, cracked, or painful lips and may even result in a red ring around the mouth.

* Always Coat Lips Before Going Out

A common mistake people often make is waiting until their lips are already chapped before applying a soothing balm. Do your best to prevent the condition altogether by heading it off at the pass and applying lip balm, lipstick or some of the other remedies listed below each day before even leaving the house or going outside.

* Reapply Lip Balm Constantly

This may seem to be a no brainer but be sure to keep on top of those chapped lips by applying lip balm consistently through the day. For example, after every drink, meal and anytime you have wiped off your lips.

Keeping lip balm in places you frequent often is a great way to remind yourself to reapply. Places such as your bedside table, your car, on top of your desk at work, etc.

* Make Sure Your Lip Balm Contains Sunscreen

Sun can damage lips like it can the rest of skin, which many people are not aware of. Be sure that the lip balm you use contains sunscreen to help prevent sun damage to lips.

* Wear Lipstick

Experts are beginning to believe that the reason far less women get lip cancer as opposed to men is due to the wearing of lipstick which naturally protects lips from the sun. So creamy lipsticks will not only help to soothe already chapped lips, but will provide that extra sun protection (not to mention will help you look good as well).

* Drink Water

Increasing your water intake can help keep lips moist from the inside out. Not to mention all of the other health benefits that are attributed to a sufficient amount of water intake. Be sure to drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water a day and you will find that you will suffer from chapped lips less often.

* Use Beeswax

Beeswax is considered one of the best old fashioned home remedies for chapped lips. Luckily you can find beeswax for a very reasonable price in just about any local drugstore or you can even order it online. Burt’s Beeswax seems to be one of the most popular brands and will work wonders for you.

* Avoid Licking

Licking your lips when they are dry or chapped might seem like the most natural thing to do but unfortunately it will have just the opposite effect. It can actually cause further dryness. The momentary moisture quickly evaporates leaving lips drier than ever. This is why applying a lip balm or even a lipstick frequently will help keep lips moist.

* Use a Honey Vaseline Mixture

Try applying a little bit of honey on your lips and let it dry. Then (without moving lips) apply a thin layer of Vaseline on top of it. Let that combination sit for about 15 minutes and then gently remove by dipping a Q-tip in hot water and swiping it once across your top lip and once across your bottom lip. If you do this just once a day for approximately 4 or 5 days, you will see a vast improvement in lips.

* Use Coconut Oil

Another great home remedy for chapped lips is coconut oil. Simply apply coconut oil (easy to find in most stores) to lips a few times a day as needed and you should see improvement pretty quickly.

* Try Aloe Vera

Another great remedy for dry or chapped lips is Aloe Vera. You can buy over the counter aloe or simply apply a small amount of gel from an Aloe plant on lips when needed.

* Sliced Cucumber

Many find that simply rubbing your lips with a sliced cucumber can be effective in eliminating chapped lips.

* Try Changing Toothpaste or Mouthwash

While most people probably wouldn’t make the connection between chapped lips and toothpastes and mouthwash, it is possible that you might have an allergy or sensitivity to the brand that you use. This is especially true of toothpastes that contain tarter control agents.
These are known to dry out lips more than regular toothpaste. This is true of some mouthwashes as well. Consider changing your toothpaste to a brand that contains more natural ingredients such as baking soda.
