It happens to just about everyone at least once in their lives. Unexpected or worse-than-expected sunburn.
Even though you might have used sunscreen or believed you wouldn‘t get burnt due to hazy weather, that tricky sun can sneak up on you and cause a painful burn that can be hot and uncomfortable.
Typical sunburn will usually find your skin turning red about 2 to 6 hours after exposure and it will feel irritated and painful. The worst of the effects are usually witnessed at 12-24 hours after exposure.
While most minor sunburns can be easily treated at home with these home remedies, it is important to seek doctor or medical care if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms: severe pain, severe blistering, nausea or vomiting, headache, fainting or if you have any other serious medical condition.
For milder (in other words – simply annoying) burns here are a few home remedies that can help you get through the next day or two as comfortably as possible.
Possible Causes of Sunburn,

* Travel to the Southern United States or regions closer to the equator
* Exposure to Higher altitudes
* Fair haired people and certain light-skinned people have a higher risk for sunburn injury

Home Remedies for Sunburn
* Apply Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is one of the greatest natural remedies for sunburn. Simply break open a fresh leaf of an aloe plant and rub the gel on the burn. Or you can use a store-bought Aloe Vera gel. Either one will work well to soothe your skin (just make sure you do not have an allergy to Aloe). For an even cooler effect, try placing your Aloe in a bottle in the refrigerator for ½ hour before use.
* Try Cheerios
Cheerios are not just for breakfast anymore! Strange as it may seem, Cheerios can actually help relieve sunburn. Pour 2 cups of Cheerios in a blender and blend at medium to high speed until it turns into a fine powder. Then simply sprinkle this powder into a luke-warm or cool bath and soak. (Be sure to place a mesh or plastic drain cover over your bath drain however so you do not clog up your pipes.) This oatmeal bath will help to relieve pain of sunburn.
* Use Baking Soda
Baking Soda is another great home remedy you use can to help ease the pain of sunburn.
Dissolve ½ cup of baking soda in a lukewarm or cool bath and soak for at least 15 minutes. Then, let the powdered solution dry on your skin.
* Apply Tea Bags or Tea to Soothe Sunburn
Tea is a great natural soother when it comes to sunburn pain.
There are a few different ways you can use tea to easy your pain. You can simply soak a couple of teabags in a cup of warm or boiling water, let cool and gently swab the bags across your burn. You can take a tea bath by pouring a jar of Nestea powdered ice tea mix in a luke warm bath and soak in in it or you can simply soak some towels in tea and place them over your burn. While these all might seem a little strange, the tannic acid in the tea is what will help relieve your sunburn pain.
* Apply White Vinegar
White vinegar is always a great item to have around the house because it can be used for so many home remedies as well as household cleaning remedies.
In this case it is great for sunburn relief. (Do not use this remedy however if there is any blistering on skin.)
You can either soak a towel or wash cloth in white vinegar and gently press against the burned areas or you can pour two cups of white vinegar in a luke warm or tepid bath and soak for at least 15 minutes. The acetic acid in the vinegar will act as a topical NSAID.
* Try Oatmeal for Sunburn Pain
Oatmeal is a good home remedy for a sun burn as well. Wrap some oatmeal in a gauze or cheesecloth and run cool water through it letting the water run into a bin. Then discard the oatmeal and soak compresses in the liquid. You can apply this to burn every 2 to 4 hours.
* Apply Yogurt
Yogurt is another great sunburn soother. Simply spread some yogurt (you can use any flavor – but the plainer the better) on the sunburn and leave it on for about 20 minutes. Then very gently wash off in a cool bath, shower or with a cool wash cloth. Easily pat skin dry – then be sure to moisturize.
* Try Desitin Rash Ointment
If you happen to have a little one in the house or even have a neighbor that does, ask to borrow some Desitin. While it is normally used for diaper rash, it can also help to reduce the redness and pain of a sunburn. Simply leave on for 20 minutes then gently remove.
* Use Cornstarch for Sunburn
Cornstarch can also help take away the burn. Simply mix enough cornstarch with water to make a paste, then gently apply to burn.
* Drink Water
One of the best things you can do for yourself when you are suffering from a sunburn it to drink lots of water. Keeping well hydrated will counterattack the drying effects of a sunburn.
* Continue to Moisturize
While the soaks, compresses and soothing baths listed above can all bring you temporary pain relief, moisturizer is what will be needed after each of these remedies to keep skin supple after a sunburn.
Eucerin is a great moisturizing lotion as is Wibi. Wibi is a topical cream that contains a little menthol which can soothe you further.
* Raise Your Legs Up
If you find that your feet or legs are swollen due to sunburn be sure to elevate your legs above heart level to keep the swelling down.
* Take Aspirin
Aspirin is great for a sunburn because it can help relieve pain, itching and swelling. Take 2 tablets every 4 hours. You should do this regardless of what remedy you use above. Actually, it is best to take aspirin if you even an inkling that you have gotten too much sun so it can get to work quicker.
When to See a Doctor or Receive Medical Treatment for Sunburn,
As mentioned at the beginning of this article, if you experience any of the following symptoms it is important to visit either your doctor or a hospital emergency room depending on the severity of your symptoms.
* Severe blistering
* Severe pain
* Nausea or vomiting
* A serious problem with another medical condition
* Sunburn is accompanied by a high fever
* Severe sunburn doesn’t begin to improve within a few days
