* Shampoo Less Frequently
You could be stripping your hair of it’s natural oils if you tend to wash your hair daily. This is especially true if you are using a harsh shampoo. If you must get your hair wet daily (when showering or for styling purposes) consider skipping the shampoo at least every other day (2 days if possible) and simply rinse hair with conditioner.
* Try Changing Shampoos
On average, the best shampoos for dry hair have a PH level of between 4.5 and 6.7. The good news however is that many of the best shampoos specifically made for dry hair are also some of the cheapest to purchase. Suave Performance Series Smoothing Shampoo Plus Conditioner for Dry and Damaged hair is a good brand as well as Herbal Essences Fruit Fusions Shampoo, Hydrating for Dry Damaged Hair.
Another brand that is quickly making it’s way up the popularity ladder is Aveeno (Nourish + Moisture) Shampoo and Conditioner. The television commercial states that you can see a major improvement in your hair in as little as three washings and personally we have found this to be true.
* Use Alcohol Free Conditioner
Alcohol based conditioners can actually dry hair further. It is very important when looking for a conditioner that you purchase one that contains very little to no alcohol.
The conditioners that usually contain the least amount of alcohol are the unscented varieties.
* Condition Often
Use a liberal amount of conditioner while in the bath or shower and let it sit in your hair for as long as possible while you are showering. Also consider using conditioner at other times as well.
Summertime is the perfect time for extra conditioning treatments. Simply put conditioner in your hair while sitting by the pool or while at the beach and let the heat from the sun help deep-condition it naturally.
* Use Mayonnaise On Hair
One of the most popular home remedies for dry hair is to use good old fashioned mayonnaise. It is important to use the full-fat version however (not a low fat or diet version). Simply slather a large tablespoon or two onto your hair and massage it all the way to your scalp. Cover your hair with a shower cap or plastic cap for approximately 30 minutes, then shampoo and rinse out well.
* Try Eggs
Eggs are another great item from the fridge that can help deep condition damaged hair and give it a super shine to boot! Try combining 3 eggs, 2 tablespoons of olive oil (or safflower oil if you happen to have it ) and 1 teaspoon of vinegar. Mix the three together well, apply to hair, then cover with a shower cap for about 30 minutes. Shampoo hair and rinse as usual.
* Do It Yourself Hot Oil Treatment
Combine 3 tablespoons of olive oil with 3 tablespoons of canola oil and place in microwave until warm. (Be extremely careful to not overheat however because the oil could get very hot!) Start applying to hair with your fingers — starting at with the ends — and working your way up to your scalp. Cover with a warm towel taken right from the dryer and leave towel on for about 30 minutes. Then shampoo out as usual. If you do not have olive or canola oil, Johnsons baby oil has also been known to do the trick. Simply follow same steps listed above.
* Try an Overnight Oil Treatment
If you have no problem sleeping with a plastic cap on, you can give yourself an overnight oil treatment. Simply apply Coconut oil or Olive oil to hair and cover with the cap. Shampoo and rinse out thoroughly the next morning (you might need to shampoo twice so hair doesn’t look weighed down).
* Try Vitamin E
Vitamin E is wonderful when it comes to increasing the vitality of your hair. You can either take Vitaman E orally in a supplemental form or try massaging natural Vitamin E oil in your hair.
* Spritz With Beer
Beer is also known to give your hair a healthy shiny glow. After your normal shampooing, towel dry your hair and then apply some beer to your hair using a spray bottle before blowing it dry.
