Home Remedies for Acne

home remedies to get rid of acne

Possible Causes of Acne

* Changes in Hormonal Levels – This is usually one of the most common causes of acne, which is why so many teenagers (usually aged 12 -24) are affected as their hormonal level changes. This is another reason why pregnant women might get acne as well.

* Heredity

* Certain Medications – There are certain medications that are also known to cause or worsen an acne condition such as:

Barbiturates – these are normally prescribed as sedatives and are effective in treating anxiety, stress and restlessness. These drugs can be very addicting and can also bring on acne.

Corticosteriods – Usually prescribed for hives or eczema these “fake hormones” can also contribute to acne due to the change in hormonal level.

Lithium – A mood stabilizer usually prescribed for bipolar disorder or depression, these drugs infuriately can have the side effect of causing acne, especially in the chest or back area.

DHEA – Anti- Aging Hormone – tends to cause more pore clogging which can lead to acne.

Anabolic-Androgenic Steroids – usually taken for performance enhancement, these steroids have been known to cause acne on the back, chest and shoulder areas in males, but tend to cause acne on the face of females.

Home Remedies for Acne

* Change Medications

If you are taking any of the medications listed above, talk to your doctor about a possible alternative. A simple switch of medication can make all the difference

* Wash Face at Least Twice a Day

Luckily this is one of the easier remedies if acne is not too severe. Simply washing your face twice a day, especially right before going to bed, can make a huge difference in getting rid of acne. This is not only important for women who need to remove all traces of makeup at night to ensure unclogged pores, but it is important for men as well to get rid of any extra dirt or oils that may have accumulated during the day.

* Change your pillow case often

This is another fairly easy home remedy that can be very effective. Clean pillowcases ensure that your face is not exposed to extra dirt or oils that may have been left behind on the old pillowcase.

* Consume More Water

Another great way to flush out your system of impurities is to consume more water. Be sure to drink at least 6 to 8 glasses a day. This will help flush out toxins from the inside out.

*Apply Toothpaste

This is probably one of the most popular home remedies for acne that is already present. Apply some toothpaste (the white paste – not the gel) on pimples before going to sleep at night and then wash off in the morning. There is a caution with this however. It seems some people can have extra sensitive skin, particularly when using the Crest brand toothpaste. If you feel any kind of tingling or burning sensation remove toothpaste immediately because this is not the home remedy for you.

* Drink Green Tea

There are too many health benefits in drinking green tea to list here, but one of the best ones is that it can really help when it comes to acne. Try to consume at least 4 cups of green tea throughout the day. Green tea has many natural benefits and one of the best ones is its ability to clean out toxins from the body.

* Try Applying Egg White

Egg White is another great way to dry out pimples that already exist (just be sure you do not have an allergy to eggs). Simply separate an egg and apply the clear part of the egg on existing pimples using a clean fingertip or Q-tip. Let dry and then wash off with warm water. You can also apply this before bed and leave overnight as long as there is not allergic reaction.

* Apply Tomato Pulp

This is another effective home remedy for acne. Simply apply fresh tomato pulp directly onto pimples and let sit for approximately an hour before gently washing off with warm water.

* Try Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E is one of the best supplements you can use for healthy skin. The good thing about it is that it works from within and without. You can purchase vitamin E oil and apply directly to skin or you can take vitamin E supplements that can improve skins overall appearance.

* Wash Your Face with Head & Shoulders Shampoo

This is an unusual home remedy for acne that is surprisingly successful. It appears that washing your face with Head & Shoulders Intensive Treatment (the one with Selenium Sulfide, not Zinc) can be a very effective way to help get rid of acne and pimples. Simply dilute some shampoo with water and mix into a small lather before applying to face (watch your eyes). This is a great remedy for body acne as well. Simply wash with the shampoo using the same method. Many people swear by this simple and inexpensive remedy.

* Keep Your Hands Away From Face

Dirt and oil on hands can easily transfer to face and cause further acne outbreaks. This is especially true if you work a job where hands get dirty and you find yourself wiping sweat or dirt off your face often. Do your best to consciously keep hands away from face during the day.

*Make Sure Your Hair is Clean and Kept Away from Face

Quite often the oil or dirt in hair can cause acne outbreaks without you even realizing it. If you wear bangs and have acne on your forehead, try keeping the hair off of your face for a few days to see if there is any improvement. Another thing to watch for is your hairline. If that is a common place for acne breakouts consider washing your hair more often or with a different type of shampoo.

*Watch Your Diet

Most people are under the mistaken belief that chocolate or greasy food is what causes acne or pimples. It has since been discovered that those foods are not directly responsible for the condition. However, that does not mean that overall diet does not play a big part in the physical appearance of skin. Eating healthier and drinking a lot of water can in fact make a big difference in overall skin condition as well as exercise to help sweat out toxins. So while no one food is the direct cause, an overall healthy diet will make a difference in the look and feel of your skin.
